Maymont, originally donated to the city after the deaths of James and Sallie May Dooley, when the 100 acre estate was turned into a park and museum. It was named after Sallie May and features a large open space area with a summertime concert series and a small zoo within its gates. To the east is the Texas Beach neighborhood, which was farmland that was sold off by the family, and named after Texas Avenue. This neighborhood is characterized by smaller two and three bedroom starter homes built in 1940’s with large grassy lots. Along the James, this neighborhood is perfect for bird and river wildlife watching near its residential homes.
